I booked this camp site online before the state prices went up. The park is divided: one side is RV friendly with hookups the other allows RVs for dry camping but is more tent friendly. The tent side is in a pine and oak grove with lots of shade. The RV side has some shade trees but not at every site. I would also like to note that not every site has water but the shared hose bib I came across was threaded and within 50' of my camp site. We dry camped and I should have called ahead before booking to get a recommendation on sites for my 30’ trailer. I selected site 35 based on the online map which was very difficult to get into and I’m pretty good at backing my rig up. There are better sites on the dry side of the campground for larger trailers I strongly recommend calling ahead. The major benefit to this campground is the American river bike trail. It’s a paved trail that runs several miles from this campground all the way to Sacramento. Other than that, it’s what I’ve come to expect. The lake was very low at this time of year and the campers around us were quite noisy right up until quite hours which they obeyed despite the fact I never saw a ranger the entire weekend. I would stay here again however certainly not in site 35.

This is a pretty popular spot reservations are a good idea it’s right off of the pacific coast highway. Ranger patrol on the weekends gave each of my 3 kids a ranger sticker. We saw a couple bats, wild horses; skunk approached our camp site at night while we were at the camp fire. We heard the coyotes at night and saw a shooting star. A few hiking trails and beach access at the lower end of the camp ground (walk the trail under the bridge). That’s what I would consider the good. The bad: hose bibs are sparsely located and don’t expect to fill from one its against the rules and they aren’t threaded. Although the ranger on patrol was nice the young kids at the gate didn’t know about a camp fire program seemed annoyed that I even asked about it. Dry camping with a family of 5 for 4 days for me meant only enough water for one set of showers luckily we have family in the area so we were able to use their shower. Don’t plan on having a water supply without driving down to the dump station if your staying on the upper loop. If you try to conserve water by using the camp ground toilets be warned the upper loop has pit toilets.

Slightly above Average Park due to amenities which included a small kid’s play area, a swimming pool, and a sub par game room. We didn’t use these amenities because we were there for Disney land which is also a perk of this park it is very close. We were escorted to our pull through site and the staff helped us park our rig. The spaces are very tight using your awning will put you right up against your neighbor. They have a nice little store in the office. Trash cans may be a bit of a walk from your camp site. A shuttle service is offered to the Disney Park however for a medium sized family it is not cost effective. There is no left turn into the RV Park which is a pain when you’re coming from the 5 and if you have a large rig such as my self a U-Turn on Ball Rd is not an option. You will need to do drive past the park 2 blocks and then circle through a block to get back in the right direction or take a different freeway exit. It’s also important to note that Disneyland does offer an RV Parking lot/Big-rig/Bus parking for $17. If you want to spend an extra day as we did pay the extra $5 dollars for parking it’s easily recovered by cooking a meal out in the lot. My 40’ rig barely fit in the Disney parking space but it did fit. I would return to this RV Park.

I stayed at 3 parks this week and this was my favorite I was very happy with it. Originally we were going to stay at campland however they would not allow a Saturday check in so we defaulted to this park and we are glad we did. Excellent security; I welcome the patrols and the gates. The park is literally right on the bay as soon as you walk out of the gate there is a warm water beach. They had a family movie night and free hot dogs one day we were there. We had excellent neighbors and the staff was extremely friendly. This was our base camp for our visit to the San Diego Zoo and Sea World. I should note that Sea World does offer RV parking for $17 if you want to extend your stay here and plan on visiting this theme park. Last comment I have regarding this park is utility location the utility pole was at the rear of the camp site our coax cable did not reach the pole so we did not get to use the free cable TV for this trip but it was not missed.

It’s a state camp ground… dry camping here. This campground is tailored more to tents and pop ups. Despite having a reservation, a high school/early college aged ranger made us drive through the tight loop to select a site which is a ways away from the front gate were you check in. You're in LA, LA locals frequent this park. I was honked at while un-hitching for taking up the one way road. I also had to run some kids off who thought it would be fun to bounce a big ball off the side of my trailer while my baby was asleep. With my tow vehicle I’m >40’. I was certainly the largest rig there that weekend. There were also several people parking on the one way street which I asked the front gate to clear out the night before I left because i knew I would have trouble making it back down the loop. Sure enough there were three cars still parked out on the road when I left one of which I had to make the camper move. The few positives about this park are a little bit of old time Hollywood here. "MASH" was filmed at this location as well as "Planet of the Apes." There is great hiking/biking/horseback riding trails. And I was told there is a small lake you can swim in but I did not visit it. I would not return to this park.

We dry camped right down on the water. Park staff was friendly. This was a great trip. I went for one night to check it out to see if it was as good as the posts suggested, and it was. We had a blast wading around in the water, even chased a fish with a big stick hoping to scare it on shore in the shallow water. This is a popular place for boaters, which I presently am not, however the marina does offer rentals, from what I understand. If you camp here in the summer expect very warm temperatures. The hooks up sites appear to be quite a bit closer together with less privacy than the dry sites. Looks like almost every dry camp site does include a fresh water spout. We camped in site 95 which at this time was the closest to the water and has a huge oak tree for picnic shade. It was just big enough to fit my 30' and tow vehicle.

I’m estimating the rate a little. I know I paid around $75 for 3 nights. Pull through sites are tight, with no room for our awning and there isn't any shade. Lucky it wasn't hot this weekend. Every one else is accurate in what you can expect from this place. Neighbor could barely get his slide out without hitting the utility pole. The back in sites seem to have more picnic room and a spot to have a fire but you need to bring your own covered pit. Lastly, don't count on getting a Wi-Fi signal from your RV.

Wasn't a popular weekend to camp but we live close and wanted to take the family up for a quick one nighter and dump my tanks there. The site we stayed in was a pull through and quite un-even but its what i would expect from this kind of cg. I briefly met with the folks that run the cg and they were very kind apparently they are semi full time there. I was 1 of only 3 campers there that night so we had the run of the place. Good thing because the roads are quite narrow and steep. We would camp here again mainly because of how close it is to home. During this time of year the lake is quite a walk from the CG. Like the other post says in spring this CG is under water.

This is the type of camp ground you would expect for a national park. Potwisha is the only campground RV accessible on the south end of the park. Reservations are not available and this camp ground is quite popular in the summer. In the winter you get your pick of the sites and it makes a good place to setup camp out of the snow if you want to visit the Wolverton snow play area which is about 30-45 minutes up the mountain from here. There are 2 dump and fill stations directly across the highway from this camp ground. There are 8 pull through sites available at this location however leveling is a challenge. There is a river within walking distance that’s nice for a swim in the hot summer months. Also a few hiking trails to a swinging bridge (haven’t been there) and hospital rock (high altitude long hike). There is an amphitheater with ranger programs during peak season. This is also an active bear area bear boxes at every camp site and in a previous tent camping experience here I did have to run a bear away from our car. The national park service does employee a bear patrol who has tagged the bears with locations.

I stayed on labor day and got the last large site. I showed up 2 days early (first come first serve). The big sites are up front, and there aren't many of them. I made the mistake of following the signs to drive all the way around in a circle to get to them. The road gets tight for a large R. I was stressing a little because some of the trees are very close to the road. I'd just back right into one of the sites up front if you have a big trailer and you're staying here. Don't drive the circle; you wont fit in any of the more scenic sights. Beware of huge falling pine cones; a neighbor got a dent in his truck. As with all the other grounds in this park there are no hook ups, but some sites have water spigots. Bring a long hose if you're staying a few days and make friends with your neighbors if you need to use their spigot. The rangers are very friendly, and the sites up front are walking distance to the amphitheater which had a program every night. The next camp is Azalea and you can actually walk over to it. They have quite a few more large sites for larger RV's. There is no dump site near these ground; we hauled ours home. The restrooms were what you would expect from a state park, not exactly clean, and there are no showers.
